“I was a drug addict, and I ran from accepting a world without her,” he told the outlet. Madison, now 2 9, told GQ that he began the documentary as a class project in 2013 while at the Savannah College of Art and Design, when he was just freshly in recovery from an opiate addiction. At one point, while secretly taping police for the documentary, he is asked if he’s done with doing drugs. It requires him to look at his aunt, his father, and even his own sister as possible suspects across the four-part series.Īt different points during the docuseries, Madison's struggle with substances is mentioned but never deeply explored. Her mysterious slaying has never been solved, but her son Madison has dedicated years of his life trying to change that. Barbara Hamburg was found bludgeoned to death outside her upscale Connecticut home. That situation is the basis of HBO’s four-part docuseries “Murder on Middle Beach,” in which the director, Madison Hamburg, investigates his mother's 2010 murder. At 9 am, Ali should already have been at school and Barbara should have already been at the courthouse.Īt the very least, Barbara would have been on her cell phone to her attorney, explaining she would be late - if she had been alive to make that phone call. It’s hard to lose a parent at a young age, and that kind of trauma is only compounded when that parent is murdered and other relatives are deemed persons of interest. If Barbara's in her pajamas driving Ali to school and stopping for Chai tea at 9 am - she's not planning to go home, get changed, and be at the court house by 9:30 am. And it would be up to your attorney to make a motion for a rehearing or a continuance. If you were to show up late, the court would likely have moved on to other cases. Most courts move on a tight schedule, especially early in the day. This was not traffic court - Barbara was the plaintiff in a claim for support from her husband - an action she brought for money she needed. I'm not sure what world you live in R167.īarbara's attorney said in the first episode that Barbara always showed up on time, and he would expect to meet her 30 minutes before their scheduled appearance. People are late for court appearances all the time Why bother to cover Barb's body with the patio cushions when it was obviously going to be uncovered so quickly and easily? by Anonymous What's the significance of the broken dog statue? Did it break as Barb tried to flee the house from her killer? What does that say? I'd think anyone who knew Barbara well would have murdered her inside the house, not taking the chance they could be identified by a a passing neighbor. Though the house was on a somewhat secluded lot, the murder happened in broad daylight out in the open. Would the daughter really have called her aunt to "discover" the body? When are we to presume Ali killed her mother if she was at school in the morning? If it was before she left for school, how did she get to school? I don't think it was her daughter or her sister or even the ex-husband, it doesn't feel like there was really enough rage for any of them to go to such extremes. But when she couldn't reach her mom, she called her aunt Conway, who she supposedly hated, to come pick her up and then the 2 women drove back to the house to find Barb's dead body. Supposedly, the mom Barbara drove her daughter Ali to school but then the daughter says she called her mom to come back and bring her home again. I'm a little confused about the time line. The murder happened in 2010 but when did Madison begin making the documentary? Did he go to the police station to tape the conversations years after the murder? by Anonymous Madison behaved like the revelation of the pyramid scheme was a surprise to him but weren't the gifting parties happening when he (or at least his younger sister) were living in the house? How did he not already know about the parties and the accusations, scandal, etc.? Was Madison in college out of state when the murder occurred? Why are we confused about this detail? If he was, why do the police seem to still consider him a suspect? Where is he and which parent was/is his? Or is Madison's father actually his step-father? But wasn't Madison older than 13 when the murder happened? And there was also mention by the grandmother or an aunt of a half-brother. Madison (the director) said to his father that he and his mother had been married 13 years when she died. I found the first episode intriguing but very confusing, particularly the way info was given to us.
